Maarten was last seen on the volcano Osorno. He spent the night in a cabin Teski Refugio and left in the morning to take pictures. He did not return. Maarten has a slender built, has full eyebrows and was wearing glasses at the time he disappeared, because of being nearsighted. He was wearing old blue pants, a light blue and a black/white sweater, a blue scarf, North Star shoes (size 43), woolen mittens and a Seiko watch. He had a small beige backpack and small model Olympus camera with him.

Maarten fue visto por última vez en el volcán Osorno. Pasó la noche allí, en el refugio de montaña llamado Teski Refugio, de donde salió por la mañana para tomar fotos, sin regresar.
Maarten es de complexión delgada, tiene las cejas pobladas y en el momento de su desaparición llevaba gafas de miopía. Vestía unos pantalones viejos de color azul, un jersey azul claro, otro blanco y negro, un pañuelo azul, zapatos de la marca North Star (del 43), manoplas de lana y un reloj de la marca Seiko. Llevaba una pequeña mochila de color beige y una pequeña cámara fotográfica de la marca Olympus.
